December 20th--Advent at ADAFT!

This evening, E and I went to a concert at a church right in the middle of town. We've often admired it from the outside, but had never gone in, and a free concert seemed like the opportunity we'd been waiting for. It was an "Evensong" concert, featuring a choir, organ and much audience singing.

Some of the singing was in English, and some in Danish. Both were surprisingly humorous! For example, we got weird added verses to old favorites, like these surprise verses to "O Come, All Ye Faithful":

God of God, light of light,
Lo! He abhors not the Virgin's womb
Very God, begotten, not created
O come let us adore him, etc. (sic)

Lo! Star-led chieftains, Magi, Christ-adoring
Offer him incense, gold and myrrh
We to the Christ Child bring our hearts' oblations
O come let us adore him, etc. (sic)

I'm pretty sure nobody there knew what an oblation was. In Danish, we have this gem:

Men ak, hvad skal jeg sige
Når jeg vil tænke på
at Gud af Himmerige
i stalden ligge må

Which means:
But ach, what shall I say
When I think of how
God of Heaven
Had to lie in a barn

Fortunately, we ended on a high note, 'Dejlig er Jorden' which was in Danish so we could feel virtuous, and we knew it, so we could feel Danificated. You can hear it on one of the previous Advent posts.
